IfcZone
What is IfcZone?
IfcZone represents a grouping of spaces that share a common characteristic, such as an HVAC zone, fire compartment, or lighting control zone. Unlike the spatial hierarchy (site > building > storey > space), zones can group spaces across different storeys and buildings.

Real-World Usage
Zones are critical for MEP engineering — defining which spaces share heating/cooling systems, which areas form fire compartments, or which rooms are controlled by the same lighting circuit. They enable cross-storey analysis that the spatial hierarchy alone cannot provide.

IfcSpace
IfcSpace represents a defined area or volume within a building, typically corresponding to a room or functional zone. Spaces carry data about their intended use, floor area, volume, and environmental requirements. They are bounded by building elements like walls, slabs, and doors.
Spatial ElementIfcBuildingStorey
IfcBuildingStorey represents a single floor level within a building. It defines the vertical organisation of a building and contains all elements located on that storey. The elevation property defines the height of the storey relative to the building reference point.
